Overreaction Could be Monitored by Bra Sensors

Bra sensorsStress has been said to be a major cause of Obesity, but actually eating too much is the main cause. A stressed person tends to overreact at any slight thing. From research, it has been observed that people after getting stressed up, tends to eat too much due to the stress and then results in increase in weight.

Some apps in recent times have been built to help people manage stress and their eating habits. But Microsoft research designers also came up with a bra sensor that helps detect stress, so it can track your mood and caution you when you are eating too much or about to.

Mary Czerwinski, a cognitive psychologist and senior researcher in visualization and interaction at Microsoft said, “It’s mostly women who are emotional overeaters, and it turns out that a bra is perfect for measuring EKG (electrocardiogram)”. “We tried to do the same thing for men’s underwear but it was too far away (from the heart).”

Microsoft built it with a standard microprocessor powered by a 3.7-volt battery. It’s able to simultaneously monitor up to eight bio-signal channels simultaneously, according to Czerwinski’s research paper, “Food and Mood: Just-in-Time Support for Emotional Eating“, which was presented recently at the Society for Affective Computing conference.

The sensors tracks heart rate and respiration with an EKG sensor. The movement of the person with an accelerator and gyroscope, and the skin conductance with an electrodermal activity sensor can also be detected by the bra sensors.

The only issue with the new tech is that its battery life is small, batteries have to be changed at 4 hours interval. But alternative ways to make the battery last longer are been looked into.
